“It’s important that industry and academia work closely together,” our Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Khelawan said as he welcomed students from the University of the West Indies (The UWI) to our first Teleios Virtual Tour for the year.
For the past seven years, these tours have been part of our efforts to provide students with opportunities that can further their academic and professional development. In 2020, we shifted with the times and continued the initiative online. This year, we had the privilege of hosting the electrical and computer engineering student year group and our Chief Software Engineer, Irwin Williams, guided them through the tour.
The major theme for this event was Exploration and Discovery, an essential part of our philosophy at Teleios as it speaks to our core value: Innovation and Creativity. “I encourage all of you to embrace a mindset of continuous learning,” Kevin Khelawan emphasized to the students. “Learning does not stop when you graduate from a university.”
Our Chief Information Officer, Dale Wilson, backed this sentiment as he described how the landscape has changed due to the emergence of cloud technology and explained that experimenting is easier than ever before. “The playing field has been levelled,” he said “If you’re doing machine learning, artificial intelligence, if you wanted to build a chatbot, there are a lot of resources to get you started. You don’t even have to start from scratch.”
The students were reminded that their exploration and discovery is not just for their own benefit, but it can have a big impact on their country, the industry, and the world. As Kevin mentioned, “There’s no way to really drive [the] advance of technology without exploration. It is critical if we have to create or advance anything.”
Our hope is that the students—and anyone reading this—go on to do great things today that can pave the way for groundbreaking innovation tomorrow. We echo the words that our CIO ended his presentation with: “Go out there and make your mark!”
